Abstract/Summary

The knowledge of automobile styling and form shows significant signs of hard to capture and represent because it is mainly composed of the implicit knowledge of designers. It could be argued that a well-defined feature line, which conveys the information of the automobile styling an d the vehicle body structure, would be the efficient way to describe and elicit the automobile styling.

100 automobiles covering the major brands from 1997 to 2007 were selected and modeled with Alias Studio. An experiment using professional designers and design students as subjects was carried out to capture the features lines with a task of automobile representative sketching and design concept sketching. The whole design task was recorded with video and analyzed with the methods of task analysis and sketch analysis. The results indicated there are 41 basic feature lines in terms of automobile styling and form representing.
