Local Motors Project Redacted Competition: the winner

Local Motors has announced the results of its Project Redacted competition for a 3D printed production vehicle. The winning project is a flexible concept by Kevin Lo.

The Project Redacted competition tasked participants to create a highway-ready 3D-printed car.

The concept by Kevin Lo – named Reload Redacted – Swim and Sport – features a flexible 3D printed platform that allows to mount different body panels for maximum customization and easy replacement in case of damage.

The concept by Kevin Lo can be easily transformed from a Dune Buggy into a compact sportscar

Local Motors is going to use DDM (Direct Digital Manufacturing) in vehicle production, with the goal of decreasing the amount of tooling while increasing speed to market for street-legal vehicles.

The first example of a DDM application was the Strati, a 3D printed car revealed in September of 2014.

Local Motors has also established a partnership with a number of US based universities to further advance 3D printing, EV drivetrains and other technologies.

The first three universities to participate in the program are the University of Michigan (U of M), Arizona State University (ASU) and the University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV).

A Low Speed Electric Vehicle from Local Motors is expected to be launched in early 2016
