PSA Peugeot Citroën Inaugurates Automotive Design Network, its New Design Center

Twenty-seven months after laying the cornerstone, PSA Peugeot Citroën today unveiled its new design centre, named Automotive Design Network, ADN*. The Centre will serve as a “genetic nursery” for the Peugeot and Citroën marques.

The designers at ADN will provide the marques with extensive, efficient resources for creating attractive, higher performance cars that express the respective identities of each marque.

ADN is located on the Group’s site in Vélizy, just outside Paris, thus benefiting from the business and cultural advantages of a major European capital. It consolidates all of the Group’s styling studios and innovation teams:
While gathered under the same roof, the Peugeot and Citroën styling teams work in different areas, a solution that promotes healthy competition by allowing for contact yet avoiding indiscriminate mixing of their distinctive styles.

The innovation and vehicle architecture teams work on vast platforms in close proximity to styling teams.

The building, which is entirely dedicated to automobile design, can accommodate up to 1,100 people, of which 900 permanent employees. More than 20 nationalities and the full array of automotive engineering skills are represented at ADN, in a commitment to conducting, applying and enhancing the engineering and design studies that precede and support the creation process.

The building covers a total surface area of 70,000 square meters on three floors. It is equipped with resources for research and design (innovation project teams) and for creation (styling studios), as well as for producing prototypes (milling machines, paint and assembly workshops, etc.).

It includes spaces that ensure confidentiality as well as areas to meet with suppliers, a number of terraces so that vehicles can be exposed to sunlight, a 900-square-meter display room and an auditorium. The facilities also offers styling teams carefully studied lighting possibilities to meet their varying needs, from direct, overhead daylight to artificial light.

ADN also has a 500-square-meter Virtual Reality Center, equipped with the auto industry’s most advanced digital simulation tools, including a Cave™ system, a Holobench and a Scale 1 screen.

This €130-million, world-class facility will enable PSA Peugeot Citroën to improve its automotive design capabilities while consolidating resources and managing costs more efficiently.

A number of architectural firms submitted competing bids for the contract to build ADN. In April 2000, a jury headed by Robert Peugeot, Vice President Innovation and Quality awarded the contract to the Ripault-Duhart firm for its project’s use of light, functional qualities, and appropriateness for automotive design.

Lighting for the Automotive Design Network was designed by installation artist James Turrell, whose façade design makes ADN not only a space for creating cars but a work of art in itself.

*: “ADN” are the French acronym for DNA
