The concept was developed for the “GOLF VISION 2020” challenge sponsored by Volkswagen and Italdesign, which was the subject of the final thesis projects for the 2012-2013 design courses at IAAD.
The Golf Vision 2020 presented here was developed as a sculptural and futuristic concept that encloses and emphasizes the main characteristics of the Golf and its typical iconic design, with the goal of creating the “perfect synthesis” of the model.
After an in-depth study of the Golf’s design evolution and its style languages, IAAD students Alberto Caruso, Nicasio Priolo and Giuseppe Sacca developed a clean, sleek exterior volume with an evolutionary yet distinctive identity.
As Alberto Caruso explains, “Since the first time, the task of our final master’s project appeared very hard…the Golf 7 had been just launched and the task from Giugiaro was to imagine a future generation of this model […] something more futuristic.”
“Considering the very gradual and “rational” evolution of the Golf’s design during the past years, the intention of doing something revolutionary appeared impossible and fascinating at he same time.”
“[We] tried to imagine a car which emphasizes all the main Golf’s design features (C-shaped C-pillars, clean lines, fast back, front and rear horizontal schemes, etc.), trying to synthesize them in a extreme, more fluent and dynamic way.”
The choice of creating a body without wheels allowed to give the vehicle an even sleeker appearance, with a “fast” element on the side that enabled “to achieve a synthesis of the car, like a capture view of a fast car in motion.”
The concept features scissor doors and uses a levitation turbine that makes the car float just above the ground, with the lower body panels absorbing the energy from the highway.
The body is realized with carbon fiber reinforced plastic, while the bodywork panels are covered by a sensible – active texture film. The interior design motive is sculptural and minimalist.
The project was selected as the best work among the thesis projects of the Master Course and was later turned into a fine milled model by the Italdesign team.
