The production-ready 208 GTi and XY were unveiled at the past 2012 Paris Motor Show, following the concepts presented at the Geneva Show in March.
Below we report some information on the common design elements. For more details check the 208 GTi and 208 XY specific posts and galleries.
Exterior Design
Compared with the standard 3-door 208 model, the GTi and XY have wider tracks (+10 mm at the front and + 20 mm at the rear), a new front end and a number of distinctive details and expanded choice of the materials and colors.
Among the new exterior elements are the body sills and wing extensions they enhance the visual appearance and dynamic character of the two cars.
The light signature of the front face is characterized by the new halogen headlamps, equipped with a latest generation light guide.
The lamps have a rectangular internal structure and use LED technology for the directional indicators and daytime lighting.
Tightly enclosing the main beam headlamps, the floating trim of which calls to mind a cat’s pupil, they give the expression of the 208 XY and 208 GTi with an iris.
These lamps frame a special 208 grille. The slightly widened chromed bead gives a prominence to the XY where on the GTi the mesh contributes to the dynamism, making the lamps stand out.
This mesh is different on each model. On the 208 XY, the chromed grille has three horizontal bars overhanging the black lacquered bar. On the 208 GTi, the gloss black grille draws the eye with bright chrome inserts, which reinvent the sport chequered flag effect but in 3D.
Gilles Vidal, Peugeot Style Director, explains “The style of these two cars intensifies the energy of the 208 with their more imposing posture, but also through the care taken over every detail.”
Interior Design
The interior features a dark color scheme throughout the upper section, on the dashboard capping covered in polyurethane PVC and overstitched, the seat trims and special details
Each model features a different atmosphere, based on their lead mascot color identity, purple for the 208 XY and red for the GTi.
The overstitching runs over the enveloping seats, the full grain leather steering wheel, the gear lever gaiter, the leather handbrake lever as well as the armrests in Prestige polyurethane PVC and the dashboard capping.
This houses a high-mounted instrument panel with innovative and distinctive light signature. Echoing the LED functions of the headlamps, the dials are surrounded with satin chrome beads backlit by LEDs, whereas the needles move on a brushed aluminum background.
The vents, the side decorations of the touchscreen, the dashboard decoration, the steering wheel insert, the seat belts, the front and rear door crossbars all blend with the same interior ambiance.
Pierre Authier, 208 Design Style Director, explains :“The 208 GTi and 208 XY are striking and clearly defined, reflecting the image of the customers for whom they are intended. This vision that has guided us throughout the project, has the desire to create an XY signature that will become identifiable over the journey of time.”
